The Cross River State
Government in collaboration with Growth and Employment in States (GEMs3) programmes have embarked on a Systematic Land Titling and Registration (SLTR) operation in Akim, Edim Otop, Atimbo and Nyanghasang areas in Calabar metropolis.
Declaring the rally open at the premises of Cross River Geographic Information Agency (CRGIA), Mr. Stephen Calder, an expert in Growth and Employment in States (GEMs3), expressed happiness at the commencement of the rally and believed that, it would finally bring sanity to the land issues in the State by making it easier for land owners to have their Certificate of Occupancy, thereby empowering them to use their land for business.
The Project Team, accompanied by cultural dancers and musical band took off from Calabar Urban Development Authority (CUDA) premises, singing and dancing, posting signs, handing out letters, and hand bills with inscription, “SLTR is going on here, Register”.
Residents and land owners interviewed during the rally expressed happiness with the Imoke-led administration over the development and promised to synergize with SLTR for the actualization of the project.
In a chat with correspondents after the rally, the Director General of Cross River Geographic Information Agency (CRGIA), Dr. Clement Oshaka, stated that SLTR involves a team of technicians, visiting every property in an area, giving door to door information and talking to the owners of each parcel of land and their neighbors in order to ascertain the boundaries of property.
It was also aimed at gathering the property owners’ names and size/shape of each land parcel which would lead to the issuance of Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) to the land owners.
Oshaka further stated that the SLTR Project would assist land owners to have their property/land properly demarcated/registered and issued with C of O which will assure the land owners of greater security for their lands and access to investment capital using their land as collateral.
He stressed that the SLTR Programme has a broader objective of providing economic empowerment to the people of Cross River State, especially to the less privileged men and women.
Our Correspondent reports that the said project commenced in June this year and was expected to be completed in December, 2014 in the pilot areas of Calabar.
