The Director-General
of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig. Gen. Johnson Olawunmi, has stated that the scheme in conjunction with the National Electoral Commission (INEC) have arranged for hitch-free-general elections, come 2015.
Olawunmi made this known during his unscheduled visit to the NYSC orientation camp in Obubra local government area of Cross River State, recently.
According to him, the scheme has arranged with INEC that allowances for corps members that would participate during the elections would be paid to corps members by the NYSC scheme.
“The use of corps members in elections has become part of the electoral process for obvious reasons. As you are all aware, corps members are well educated and enlightened to handle election materials in all local government areas of the federation.
“No corps member is expected to collect money from any politician or give out sensitive electoral materials for any financial reason.”
“Any corps member caught in this act will be severely punished,” he said.
The Director-General  expressed satisfaction with the security arrangements in the Obubra camp and, commended Governor  Liyel Imoke of Cross River for ensuring adequate protection of corps members serving in the state.
He said that his administration would be remembered for ensuring that corps members keyed into the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneur Development (SAED) programme.
“NYSC is collaborating with the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Bank of Industry to facilitate loans to corps members with good business ideas,” he said.
