Commissioner Reassures On Traffic Management

The Edo State Commis
sioner for Transport, Mr Omo-Ojo Orobosa, has absolved officials of the state traffic management agency of blame in the increasing public outcry against their mode of operation.
Speaking with newsmen in Benin, Orobosa said that rather than cast aspersion on the officials, the people should blame the foundation upon which the agency was established in 2010.
He said the foundation was faulty and that the state planned to look inward to re-position the agency.
He said the government had discovered that the agency was hurriedly put together because the existing traffic units of federal agencies were over-stretched.
The commissioner said it had become clear that the agency was not equipped enough in terms of human capacity, training and basic education before they were recruited in 2010.
Orobosa, however, noted that since the state government had realised the problem traffic control would pose with the construction and expansion of more city roads, it had decided to give the people a traffic agency that could stand the test of time.
“So when we are saying that the public outcry is huge, we should equally remind ourselves of the benefit the agency has been to the society for the past three to four years,’’ he said.
The commissioner conceded that some of the officials were overzealous and untrained while some were involved in extortion.
“I attribute this lapse to the way they were recruited at that time because of the exigency of the time and also because of the nature and attitude of members of the public who are largely insensitive to the traffic rules in Edo.
“But I must say that these officials may have performed fair and that has brought us to where we are today.
“For now, we have made up our mind to declare internal and external vacancies, the existing ones will apply as well as fresh ones for the proper constitution of a structure having a chief executive as required by law.’’
He, however, noted that setting up the agency properly might not solve the problem if the road users failed to change their attitude.
