As part of measures to cushion the effects of the lockdown as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic, the Andoni Local Government Council of Rivers State, has distributed food items worth millions of Naira to over 185 communities in the area.
The Tide learnt that both indigenes and non-indigenes in Andoni benefitted from the distribution exercise.
Speaking during the ceremony at Ngo, the council headquarter, Chairman of the council, Hon. Paul Lawrence Paul said the gesture was to cushion the effects of the sit -at -home order as well as encourage them to support government’s effort at checking the spread of the virus.
Hon Paul also charged chairmen of the various Community Development Committees (CDCs) in the area to ensure fairness in the distribution of the food items.
He warned against the hijack of the items. “The food items must not be hijacked by any individual or group of individuals irrespective of status but must be distributed to every household in all communities as palliative to cushion the difficulties and effect of the virus being faced by all families in the local government area”.
Hon Paul also warned against politicizing the palliatives adding that every family irrespective of political affiliations must benefit from the gesture.
While assuring them of subsequent supports, the council boss also urged the people to continue to adhere to government directives, by maintaining high level of personal hygiene.
Receiving the items on behalf of the communities, chairman of the Palliative Implementation Committee, Elder Paul Reuben and the Chairman Community Development Committee (CDC) Ngo, Mr. Clement Sunday commended the chairman for the gesture, assuring that the committee will ensure transparency in the distribution of the items.
Items distributed include, bags of rice, garri, beans and indomie noodles as well as hand sanitisers.
