The Majority Leader, Edo
State House of Assembly, Mr Philips Shuaibu, has urged Nigerians to be patient with the National Assembly (NASS) as it makes effort to come out with a workable constitution.
Shuaibu, gave the advice in an interview with newsmen in Benin , the Edo State capital.
He said that for the country to get it right, NASS must be given all the time needed to carry out a thorough amendment of the constitution.
The lawmaker disagreed that the constitutional amendment was taking more time than necessary.
Shuaibu explained that amending the constitution was different from the ordinary lawmaking process.
“I think it is better that it takes very long time than for us to bring a document that will not make meaning to Nigerians.
“We are talking about laws that govern us, and when those laws are to be taken it should not be taken in a hurry.
“This is so, most especially as it has to do with the lives and social wellbeing of Nigerians.
“So, I think what is paramount, to me, is a workable document acceptable to Nigerians and that we also make provision for their welfare.
“We also put Nigeria in a place where the international community will see us as law abiding citizens and a society driven by law,’’ he said.
Shuaibu, disagreed with the insinuations in some quarters that the proposed National Conference will usurp the role of the lawmakers.
“The president cannot implement resolutions of the conference without the National Assembly.
“It is when he does that you can now say he has usurped the power of the lawmakers.
“We all have to wait until it gets to that stage”.
