Ex-Lawmaker Decries Lack Of Electricity In Rural Areas

A former member of
Akwa Ibom House of Assembly, Mr Usenobong Akpabio, has said that without adequate power supply, rapid transformation of rural areas would not be achieved.
The ex-lawmaker, who spoke in an interview in Uyo, said that rural communities in the country had remained undeveloped because of poor electricity supply.
He regretted that 15 years after the country returned to civil rule, most rural communities were yet to enjoy adequate power supply and other dividends of democracy.
“Electricity will enhance meaningful economic ventures in the villages and the problem of this country is that we have failed to prioritise.
“It is my belief that if the problem of power supply is solved in this country, it will eventually result in economic boom,” he said.
Akpabio, who represented Uruan State Constituency from 2003 to 2011, said that transformation of the rural communities needed commitment and adequate funding.
“We must tailor our programmes toward sustainable empowerment of our people, not aesthetic empowerment,” Akpabio added.
