National President, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Chris Isiguzo, has urged Nigerian journalists to protect the nation’s democracy by avoiding sensational journalism.
Isiguzo gave the advice shortly after arriving the Rivers state NUJ Press Centre with his entourage from the Rivers State Government House, Port Harcourt where he paid a courtesy visit to the Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike.
He warned journalists not to be carried away by pecuniary interests, but should focus their interest more on the development of the country.
“We contributed immensely in getting this democracy in 1999; most of our colleagues paid the supreme price, therefore, it becomes important that we also protect this democracy as we go about our activities in the course of the forthcoming general elections in the country.

“When we do our own part, I believe the society and the agents of state would do their own parts,” Isiguzo said.
Also speaking National President, the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Mrs Ifeyinwa Omowole, described the visit of the NUJ President, as a good way to start, saying if you don’t interact with your people you can never know or understand what their needs are.
Omowole added that embarking on visit to all the councils would forge good relationship between the National executive members and all the state councils.
She also advised journalists to take precautionary measures as the country’s general elections drew nearer.
“You are only alive to write the next story, so be careful, watch your back, don’t go where you are not supposed to go and anytime you are embarking on any visit to anywhere, let people know about your movement.
“It is advisable that while going to cover the general elections to be held soon in the country, look for your colleagues that would be covering in the same area and move as a team, don’t go alone,” Omowole warned.
