Theft: Court Slams N400,000 Bail On Housemaid

trates’ Court, Benin, has admitted a 14-year-old housemaid, Blessing Danjuma, to bail in the sum of N400,000 for allegedly stealing gold necklace and wristwatch valued at six million naira.
Danjuma was arraigned  with two others, Peter Dapar, 22, and Amos Gomos, 32, on a two-count charge bordering on conspiracy and stealing.
The Chief Magistrate, Mr W.I Aziegbemhin, who granted them bail after they pleaded not guilty to the charge, ordered them to produce one surety each in like sum.
Aziegbemhin said that he imposed the bail condition based on the sensitivity of the case and to ensure that the accused was always present for trial.
He said that the sureties must be working in a recognised establishment.
The Prosecutor, Mr A.O Enobabor, had told the court that the accused committed the offence on August 14, at No. 22 Garrick Avenue, off Siluko Road, Benin.
Enobabor said that Blessing conspired with Dapar and Gomos to steal 15 sets of gold necklace valued at four million naira and a gold wrist watch valued N1.5 million belonging to Faith Obazee.
He said the offence contravened sections 516 and 390 (9) of the Criminal Code.
The case was adjourned till October 31 for hearing.
