The Port Harcourt
Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC) has confirmed the arrest of six persons suspected to have vandalised electricity cables at facilities in Eket local government Area of Akwa Ibom.
The Manager, Corporate Communications of the company, Mr Jonah Iboma, confirmed this in an interview with newsmen in Eket.
Iboma said that security operatives caught the suspects while they were vandalising armoured cables in a transformer situated by Grace Bill Road in Afaha Eket.
According to him, the theft was the second in two months in Eket and its environs.
“I have called the Manager in Eket and he told me that six vandals were arrested last week and I wish to commend the effort of the security agencies.
“I demand that more effort should be put in by residents of Eket to report suspected vandals to the police.’’
He, however, decried the incessant vandalism of electricity cables in the state, warning that the situation, if allowed to continue, might lead to constant power outage in the state.
The manager commended the security agencies for mounting 24-hour surveillance of facilities in the state.
He said that the suspects were already being prosecuted.
It would be recalled that a suspected vandal was electrocuted while trying to vandalise armoured cables at a 500 KV Sub-station, under Qua River 11Kv Feeder Pillar in Eket last month.
