The Cross River State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Mrs. Angela Oyo-Ita, has promised full accreditation for all the schools of Nursing and Midwifery across the State before the next academic session in November.
Prof. Oyo-Ita who stated this during the Convocation ceremony of the School of Nursing, Calabar charged the graduating students as professionals in the health sector, to be “the hand of God to preserve life whenever the opportunity offers itself and not to destroy it”.
The Health Commissioner lamented that most often, lives entrusted in the care of such professionals have been lost due to professional negligence and urged the graduating students to be diligent at all times and remember the motto of the Nursing profession, “Service to Humanity”, adding that they needed a compassionate heart to deliver this service.
She reiterated the passion of the State Governor, Senator Liyel Imoke towards healthcare delivery, maintaining that it was during this administration that the Schools of Nursing and Midwifery secured provisional accreditation, which has been lost recently.
Prof. Oyo-Ita who was also the visitor to the school, commended the Principal organising the first convocation ceremony since the school’s inception in 1975, and urged the staff and management of the school to cooperate with the government to ensure that the goal of achieving full accreditation for the school is achieved.
The Chairman of the Ceremony, Prof. Mrs. Mildred John in her address, described the occasion as an important milestone in the educational journey of any student as it marks the end of one stage in the journey through life, and the beginning of the next,
She congratulated the graduating students for completing the course of study, which she described as an ardous task and urged them to demonstrate their gratitude to God for the success by practicing nursing with a conscience.
